Impressive showing by Thais


Thai sailors enjoyed a huge success at the 2021 Optimist Asian & Oceanian Championship which ended on Saturday at the Royal Varuna Yacht Club in Pattaya.

A total of 64 boats from eight nations participated in the tournament.

Turkey were crowned champions in the team racing championship, followed by runners-up Thailand 1 and Thailand 2.

Thailand 1 won the overall Asian Team Racing Cup, ahead of runners-up Thailand 2 and Singapore.

Thailand 1 members were Kan Kachachuen, Nattakan Somdee, Noppassorn Khunboonjan and Thanapat Sirichareon.

Thailand 2 sailors were Weka Bhanubandh, Prin Subying, Patcharaphan Ongkaloy, Pitipoom Jaroenpon and Nanvatorn Supaamphonwit.

Weka won the gold medal in the individual event, ahead of silver medallist Ege Erdemli from Turkey and bronze medallist Wylder Smith of the US.

Turkey's Madine Tatlican was the overall champion in the Women's Cup with Patcharaphan second and Prin third.

Weka also won the Asian Cup ahead of Soshi Fujita of Japan, who was second, and Chanatip.

Thailand swept the medals in the Asian Women's Cup with Patcharaphan taking gold, Prin silver and Noppassorn.

In all, Weka was first overall and Asian events while Chanatip was fifth overall and fourth among Asian sailors.

In the women's competition, Patcharaphan was 14th overall and first in the Asian categories.
